We are saddened by the passing of former Dodgers All-Star second baseman and World Series champion Davey Lopes.
Along with Steve Garvey, Bill Russell, and Ron Cey, Lopes was part of the historic homegrown Dodgers infield quartet which played together from 1973-81.
Lopes made four consecutive All-Star teams from 1978-81 and won the NL Gold Glove in 1978. He was the leadoff hitter and catalyst on three National League pennant-winners (1974, 1977, 1978) and the 1981 World Series champions.
Lopes also played on Postseason teams with the Cubs (1984) and Astros (1986), and spent time with the A’s during his 16-year career. He later managed the Brewers for parts of three seasons from 2000-2002. As a coach, Lopes was also a member of the 1998 NL champion Padres and the 2008 world champion Phillies.
He twice led the NL in stolen bases and finished with 557 career steals, which still stands 26th all-time.
Lopes was 80 years old.
